Summer Announcements

I thought it was time that I start actually doing my job, and communicating! :p If you havent met me yet, my name is Nate and I am the VP Comm for 2009/10. I’ve just had a look at the LING email and there are a couple interesting tidbits that y’all might like to know.

Slovakia1. Suppression of Slovak Language. Here is a message forwarded from a Linguistics Prof at a Hungarian University.

Dear Fellow Linguists,

The National Council of the Slovak Republic passed an act on June 30th, 2009, modifying earlier regulations applying to the use of the Slovak language as the state language of the Slovak Republic. The new regulations restrict the use not only of other languages but also variants of the Slovak language, threatening violations of the law by imposing fines of EUR 100 to 5000 on individuals and businesses, running to EUR 165,000 in case of media organisations.

We find these restrictions untenable both linguistically and from the point of view of human rights. By determining the language, and the language variant to be used, the Act wishes to control communication in all public situations, also those outside the competence of the state, such as consultations among patients and doctors, scientific conferences, business meetings, communication in the offices of local governments.

Therefore we ask everybody who disagrees with the amendments of the Slovakian language law to sign the petition issued officially by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
To read about the details and sign the petition, go to http://peticio.nytud.hu/

McCCLU - this weekend!!

The third annual McCCLU, McGill’s Canadian Conference for Linguistics Undergraduates, will be happening this weekend! When McCCLU was first held three years ago, it was the only event of its kind in Canada; this year, we’re proud to continue in this auspicious tradition with a program that is more engaging than ever! For three days SLUM will host speakers discussing original research in all areas of linguistics. The majority will be undergraduates, just like you! If you’re interested in seeing the sorts of fascinating things your peers are working on, possibly even leading to inspiration for your own research, you won’t be disappointed! Other highlights include:

- Keynote speeches by faculty members Heather Goad and Bernhard Schwarz
- Wine & cheese reception and drinks at Carlos & Pepe’s on Friday, pizza party Saturday, and breakfast food throughout the weekend
- Your own classmates from McGill, presenting on their research conducted within this very department!

Check out our schedule: http://mccclu.ausmcgill.com/blog/2009-schedule/

If you’re intrigued, swing by registration on Friday - 4:00-5:45 in the Linguistics building, 1085 Dr. Penfield - to sign up and get more information; if you’ve already pre-registered, come by then to receive your nametag and program. If you’ve got any questions, contact mccclu2009@gmail.com.

Hope to see you there!
