Welcome Back Ling Students!

13 01 2009

I hope you all enjoyed winter break and are ready to jump right in to the new semester! SLUM has some exciting things planned for you… pizza parties, McCCLU (March 6-8), Future Week (end of March), and more!

First up is a PIZZA PARTY:  Thursday January 15th from 4:30-6:00 pm in the Linguistics Lounge (1085 Dr. Penfield, room 212). Come celebrate the new semester and catch up with your fellow Ling students (or meet some new ones) over free pizza and beverages!

In other news, here are two great ways for you to get involved with SLUM:

  • SLUM wants you to be our AUS representative: Do you want to meet lots of cool linguistics undergrads, add something to your resume, and get involved with SLUM? Now’s your chance! We are looking for someone to represent SLUM at biweekly AUS council meetings (which often involve free food) and to keep SLUM abreast of all the news from AUS. Contact Laura (laura.kalin@mail.mcgill.ca) for more information.

  • McGill’s Canadian Conference for Linguistics Undergrads (McCCLU):  McCCLU is back! This year, SLUM will be hosting the third annual McGill Canadian Conference for Linguistics Undergraduates from Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 8. The past two McCCLUs have been great successes, attracting students from across North America, and this year promises to be just as exciting. Interested in getting hands-on experience in conference preparation? Volunteer! There will be a meeting for anyone interested in volunteering this Thursday at 3 in the Linguistics Lounge (right before the pizza party). If you can’t make it but still want to get involved, drop an email to mccclu2009@gmail.com. Interested in the opportunity to present original research? Send in an abstract (should be 1 pg in length - see attached call for papers) to mccclu2009@gmail.com. Your work will be reviewed, and if accepted, you will be able to share it at McCCLU!

Our next meeting will be this Wednesday (January 14th) from 12:30-1:30 in the Ling Lounge. We’d love to see you there!

That’s about it for now!! Don’t forget to join our facebook group, SLʌM! Stay tuned for more news later this semester :)
